Using 100 percent in your classroom
A fourth grade teacher has a daily routine for what students should do when coming back from lunch each day. The students are asked to quickly use the restroom and then stand in a line quietly with their backs against the wall before walking back to the classroom in a single file line. One day, towards the middle of the year, a group of girls are giggling in line while waiting on the rest of their classmates to use the restroom. First she loudly reminds the entire class that everyone should be standing quietly and in line. (This is an example of using positive group corrections as a form of intervention.) At first the girls stop talking, however moments later two of them start talking again and ignore your reminder. So you walk over to the two girls and quietly ask them to stop talking and then walk away. (This is an example of using private individual correction.)
